Although the Surface Windows RT only a week in Belgian stores seems just about everyone there is already an opinion about it. And that is not always positive. A common criticism is that Microsoft's first tablet too limited and therefore expensive. High time for the unit even on the bench to explain.
Thanks to its magnetic snap keyboard is used as the hybrid Surface tablet and as a mini-laptop. The device is powered by Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 which is adapted for devices with a so-called ARM processor. This conversion involves a significant limitation with it, but we will soon be expanded to return.
Microsoft offers you a choice of two different keyboards: a thin 'touch' copy and a slightly thicker model with traditional keys. The first keyboard looks stylish and type certainly not bad, but give us the longer pieces of text anyway but the 'classic' model. You can buy or immediately release tablet bundled with a keyboard. In that case you pay for the keyboard but no € 129.99 € 100. Unfortunately you can not choose which keyboard you want in the bundle, which is by definition the touch variant - in Belgium, available in black, white and blue. Behind the Surface is a sturdy folding kickstand which screen a pleasant viewing angle of 22 degrees gives.
Sturdy but elegant
With its 10.6-inch HD widescreen ClearType is a tad narrower the Surface but considerably longer than, say, an iPad. The 16:9 ratio is particularly pleasant in the horizontal position (the Metro interface with tiles is really made for), but in portrait mode feels somewhat unnatural - perhaps because a 4:3 ratio (like the iPad) more associations evokes the familiar format of a page from a magazine or book. The screen resolution of 1366 x 768 is pretty standard for such a tablet, but no match for Apple's Retina display. Especially small letter may eyes not nearly as sharp. About the build quality then nothing but praise: the surface looks and feels very robust, while he yet elegant look.

In laptop mode initially hardly noticeable difference to a normal, albeit small Windows 8 notebook with touchscreen. So you have a full keyboard with touchpad, USB 2.0 port, micro SDXC card slot (well hidden behind the kickstand), stereo speakers and two 720p HD cameras, front and back. With its quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and 2 GB of RAM feels pretty smooth to the Surface moreover.
The main difference lies in the fact that you are on a Windows machine RT-only applications can install from the Microsoft Store. Apps, in other words. Standard desktop programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Photoshop or iTunes are not supported by Windows RT. The only exceptions to this rule are using Internet Explorer 10, Windows Explorer and the free included Office 2013 Home and Student, consisting of the components Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. For whom the full Windows 8 experience on a hybrid device will, at a later time the Microsoft Surface Pro (Intel-based) on the Belgian market launch. Not that you do have to wait, because many competitors have such a device is already in the range. Consider the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro, Acer Iconia Tab W510 or ASUS Vivo Tab.
Difference
"In comparison with such devices, the Surface RT indeed its limitations, but you can also reverse", Microsoft responds to the mouth of Jean-Benoit Van Bunnen, in Belgium and Luxembourg is responsible for the Windows division. "Many other tablets also run only apps, but at the Surface RT get two extras: a clip-on keyboard (in the bundle, ed) and a copy of Microsoft Office 2013." There's something about that. On an iPad is something you can not install Mac OS X software. Is that annoying? For one user, but not for the other. Why Microsoft thinks that the two concepts are tradable. Or, as the company puts it: "The Surface RT is a tablet PC capabilities," companion ", while the Surface Pro more should consider a notebook with tablet functionality".
If that is not immediately explain the choice easier, it helps the difference in price might: in the United States, where the Pro version is now already in the shops, the device is available from $ 899. That's eighty percent more expensive than the entry-level model with Windows RT (32GB, WiFi-only) that with us - no keyboard - 479 euros. In comparison to the entry-level iPad (16GB WiFi only) you pay € 499. Keep in mind that the cheapest Surface RT in practice only 16 GB of free memory space. The other half is already immediately seized by the operating system and Microsoft Office. Fortunately, you can use this limited capacity or add a memory card. Whether you buy the more expensive model course immediately (€ 579) with 64 gigabytes. The lack of 3G, according to Microsoft are collected with a 3G USB dongle, but that we ourselves have not tested it. Eventually, according to a Microsoft Surface model with 3G "on-board" appear, but further details about it are not yet known.
Conclusion
Should a tablet, hybrid or not, necessarily the experience and functionality of a full laptop offer? The success of the iPad proves not. There are users who do need? In a world where 90 percent of people using Windows: doubt. Microsoft's choice not to choose, and the two solutions in spacious separate price ranges, according keeps us therefore best stitch. What we do question places the Apple-like price tags that Microsoft uses for the Surface RT. For where Apple empire alone, there are Windows-country many pirates on the coast. And some of them are not afraid of special value. For € 499 you have for example an Acer Iconia Tab W510, complete with keyboard and have the entire Windows 8 environment. With such devices, you can continue to compete in only one way, and that is by itself sooner or later a price reduction to take effect.
The Surface RT is one of the few tablets with the ARM optimized version of Windows. The biggest difference has been mentioned in this review (no support. Exe software) and frankly I do not know what I have to add it. The desktop environment still exists but can only be used by the apps that Microsoft has made specially available and provided services. The most important are undoubtedly the Office package and the desktop version of Internet Explorer. The majority of the time however, you will spend in the modern Windows 8 environment with the tiles and apps that only through Microsoft's own store for sale and to install.
The modern environment is well suited for control with your fingers and although there is a fairly steep learning curve, you can after a while good feet in this modern setting. All the standard features you would expect from such a machine are just there and so it is possible to enjoy browsing, e-mail reading and writing, social media to spam and more. Besides the standard apps that standardized information like news, weather and stock in a nice way show is of course the Windows Store. The selection of apps is not enormous but what seems to grow and for the most simple things is now something to find. But your choice is always limited and new emerging popular apps you currently much rather find on iOS and Android, and it is still questionable whether Windows 8 is going to be popular enough to convince developers to do first (or fast) their apps for the Windows platform available.
The most eye-catching of the RT Windows software is perhaps that Microsoft has chosen Office 2013 RT directly tubed, and there is not an additional purchase for asking. Office runs as one of the few apps within the desktop environment and although a feast of recognition for anyone who has used Windows XP/Vista/7, it is a tablet user yet optimal. The interface is not sufficiently optimized to control via taps and swipes properly process. Precisely because Office applications is important to a keyboard to choose when purchasing the Surface RT. The covers are fine options from Microsoft and have by far the best integration with the tablet. But it is not only the keys that are so important but because of the lack of optimization of the UI should certainly benefit the track pad (mouse surfaces) that the covers are not to be underestimated.
RT Windows takes about 16GB in use on the hard disk. A "mobile" OS 16GB is huge and sharply points out, that Microsoft is not a special version optimized for ARM has developed but more that the "normal" version ported to ARM. The combination of hardware and software of this tablet is as stable as you describe, but later can read not without problems.
Microsoft Surface RT - In use
It's the little things that make the difference when it comes to tablets. Things like build quality and tricks when it automatically enable or disable the tablet if the cover is closed are things you daily observes and learns to appreciate. Especially if you have experience with hardware on points such refinement misses mark your favor. Microsoft has in terms of materials and build quality good for each other and the integration between their own keyboard options and the tablet is optimal.
But by the choices that Microsoft has made there are still some disadvantages or limitations. Microsoft is clearly on the approach that you should also be able to work on a tablet. The combination with a keyboard cover and the Office 2013 RT package that comes there are strong indications of. Although I am a fan of the combination type Surface Cover + RT is very weird with a mobile device should be limited to a desk or table. The type Cover and kickstand make namely that the use on the lap is not really possible. However, the cover is properly used to (folded) as substrate to serve the kickstand for use on couch and bed, and you therefore with the on-screen keyboard may further tapping (see video in linked article on keyboards). I'm not sure if I would describe this as a disadvantage but a strange and in some cases limiting experience is. On the other hand, forces the user the Surface RT really seen as a tablet, a tablet as we know from iOS and Android. By limiting I have at least the tablet much more 'loose' use, compared to other Windows 8 hardware which in many cases it seemed a bit pointless to do without keyboard.
Windows RT and the new interface of Windows are basically good and standard applications you want to use on a tablet are present. Yet the Tegra 3 processor is clearly not so powerful that the software can be run without delays, especially when there are more than a few apps I use regularly noticed delays. This is especially problematic when the (in my case) Cover type is used to rapidly tapping the device while the tablet effort, the input data and do appear on the screen. I'm not talking just about Word because even a simple text app as Metro Markdown am I frequently encountered.
The more limited range of apps in the Windows Store makes it difficult the Surface RT real as competing tablet for iPads and Android tablets to see. A large part of the charm of a tablet for me because the huge app offering that is often found creating many new applications to consider for your tablet. So my iPad in the course of time developed into a device where I not only games to play and browse, but on tap (Drafts), photo editing (eg Photoshop, iPhoto, and Snapseed) videos with make (Pinnacle Studio) and dozens if not hundreds of other apps to use, not only as entertainment but certainly also as a device where I can make something.
Actually, at this moment only the Office package that the Surface RT (RT and other hardware) distinguishes in the field of "work" on a tablet. As this Office version just own official version of Microsoft package, you can say that it is the most compatible version of Office on a tablet. But for both iOS and Android there are plenty of options without too much difficulty a great alternative forms, with or without purchasing a keyboard accessory. And in many cases, such a combination is more versatile and terms of your use of the keyboard (which you really can describe as a requirement for use of Office) is not confined to a desk.
The lack of apps in many cases at least in theory be met by alternatives in the form of websites / web apps use. Unfortunately, the browser on the Surface RT is not very good, and Microsoft has a lot to IE10 tweaking before it can join with the browser on iOS and Android. Minor problems in the rendering of web sites are much easier to forgive than the problems that the Surface RT often with scrolling. Especially the fact that Microsoft does not use WebKit is that there are many modern websites that do not work optimally on the Surface RT. Many large and popular websites do have the necessary adjustments to their services usable on relatively low-powered mobile devices like iPads and Android tablets but optimization for Internet Explorer is something that is very long seen as a dirty word. In a rare benchmark that I turned to my experience bars with figures showed the Surface RT browser (subway) also significantly less well than the browser on the iPad mini (scores respectively. 339 vs. 519). Using the browser in desktop mode is for me simply not recommended on a tablet such as the experience there just yet lacks optimization.
The only reason I did not get away to come here again my standard story about lousy tablet camera, AOS to run is due to Microsoft's decision to the camera on the back of the Surface RT at a weird angle. Microsoft has chosen the angle that makes the tablet while using the built-in kickstand to choose if, Äòbaseline, Äô. This means that if the tablet is diagonally behind the camera is straight forward. This can be useful in meetings but so little AON any other application, this is a disadvantage. A huge disaster, it is not because the camera is not in any way so special that you should want to use such vacation, AOS bring. Both cameras, AOS are especially suitable for video chat, for example via Microsoft's own Skype.
speakers
The 10.6 inch display that between the two speakers on the sides of the Surface RT placed is large enough to actually get the stereo effect of these speakers can recognize. Ultimately, only two small speakers with limited volume but are the speakers for most applications. Watching a YouTube video or listening to music is not a problem as long as you are in a quiet location. Unfortunately, the speakers especially bothered by the appearance of voices (singing but also podcasts) and you will if you're somewhere where anything from background noise is soon want to grab a pair of headphones.
Touch and Type Cover
The Surface RT can be bought separately or in combination with a keyboard cover. Only the combo with TouchCover really comes as a package but there is also a Cover type available. These keyboards clicking magnetically attached to the Surface RT and have tricks as automatic on or off of the screen and serve alongside keyboard as protection for the screen.
Lead by good example is of course only possible if there really is to recognize innovation in hardware is released. Microsoft Surface tablets for a few very special courage to make choices which are now a tablet that is not really comparable to those before Windows 8 tablets on the market. In terms of materials, Microsoft has chosen a combination of glass and a magnesium alloy (VaporMag), and it is clear that a lot of attention is paid to the choice of these materials and build quality. The Surface RT feels like a premium device and has the same level of fit-and-finish as an Apple product.
A tablet with a 10.6 inch display can not be the smallest tablet course but Microsoft has both the size and weight really able to censor. The light VaporMag material from which almost the entire back there appears to safeguard the tablet thin and light. In design was chosen fairly hard angles and optimization of the sides of the tablet to a connection and USB 2.0 port as possible. The most special feature of the design choices is of course the kickstand of the Surface RT. At the back of the Surface RT is incorporated ie a valve which can be folded out to the Surface tablet on a table to put down. This kickstand is not only useful for watching a film but also has an important role if the user chooses to use one of the two keyboard covers.
Display
The 10.6 inch display is a ClearType HD panel and has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. In terms of resolution or PPI is not a tablet leader in battle but it's certainly not a bad screen. The viewing angles are excellent and also the color and extent to which the display can be illuminated (brightness) are fine. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass (2) and that makes the combination between the front and back of the tablet is not only very chic is also very solid.
Processor and RAM
The Tegra 3 processor we know most people from different Android hardware. This quad-core processor Nvidia developed for tablets and has important qualities when it comes to energy efficiency and performance in relatively simple use. Although the Tegra 3 quad-core processor called has not 4 but 5 cores, the fifth core is an additional economical (and slow) core that simple (background) perform tasks without too much load on the remaining 4 cores, and the battery.
2GB RAM sounds like a great luxury on a tablet and although I would not just negate must be said that Windows standard RT already quite a lot of RAM used and that the available RAM is sufficient in principle but not as abundant can be described.
Connections and Controls
In addition to the standard things like on / off and volume buttons one HDMI port (micro), headphone jack (stereo) microphone and speakers, the Surface RT for one tablet two "special" connections. A full-size USB 2.0 port allows a wide range of peripherals and via a microSD card reader (under the kickstand is hidden), the internal memory of the tablet increased. This in itself is a fairly complete tablet equipped with interesting options for things like an external mouse, printer or hard disk to connect.
The site iFixit takes popular gadgets under the microscope and shows consumers how easy or difficult a particular gadget just to repair itself. In recent months we have by iFix disassembled tablets pass by and this week the website has published a list of easy to difficult to repair to repair models.
Dell XPS 10
Of course, each tablet be returned to the retailer or manufacturer if something is broken but there are a lot of people who prefer to want to solve the problem without having to send the tablet. According to iFixit are owners of a Dell XPS 10 tablet hereby in favor. This tablet gets a 9 the highest score according to the website easy to disassemble, contains labels for all cables and includes colored screws The only drawback of the XPS 10 is that the LCD to the glass panel is glued.
Amazon, Dell, Motorola and Samsung
On the shared second place we find the Amazon Kindle Fire, Dell Streak, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) back. All four tablets are relatively easy to disassemble but each have their own detriment. Thus, for the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) a heat gun can be used to replace the LCD and features the Motorola Xoom on as many as 57 screws, making it apart what will last longer.
Apple and Microsoft
If we look at the lower echelons of the list we see tablets from Apple and Microsoft back. The Microsoft Surface Pro is even on the last place. The only plus of this tablet is that the battery is soldered to the motherboard. For the rest you take a risk to break things when you open the device and a lot of glue used to hold everything in place. The Microsoft Surface Pro also gets the number 1. Apple makes it just a little better but with a grade 2 for all iPad models is the self repair is still not recommended.
Microsoft to bring the Surface RT his first "computer" on the market. It has a 10.6-inch tablet with Windows operating system and RT with heart Nvidia SoC (System-on-Chip) which we use in many recent Android tablets rooms. We have tested the Surface RT.
The Surface RT is the first Windows tablet with an ARM processor that we tested. In appearance and size, he seems very similar to the recently tested by us Acer Iconia Tab W510, but the tablet has a full Intel x86 processor and runs the full version of Windows 8.
The Surface RT RT uses Windows ("Run") as the operating system, the version of Windows 8 that is suitable for ARM processors, and no existing Windows x86 programs. We run only known Windows apps that you can download or buy the Windows Store. Some apps are already installed. It is also the RT version of Office 2013, more about that later.
In some countries, including the U.S.A. Microsoft released its own x86-based Windows 8 tablet. This Surface RT Pro tablet will ever come to us on the market, but that will be a lot more expensive than the ordinary Surface RT that we tested. When the Surface Pro in Belgium and the Netherlands on the market, is unknown. Microsoft is facing supply problems. You'll be on the Pro-tablet your existing Windows programs can run, unlike the ordinary Surface RT.
Design
The Surface RT is 1.5 to 2 cm wider than the typical Android or Apple tablet. This applies to all Windows 8/RT-tablets. The advantage is that you can more easily with ten fingers on the screen keyboard typing. The disadvantage is that the tablet slightly less well in the hand.
With a weight of 689 grams (Microsoft says "less than 676 grams", but according to our weighting is even slightly more than 689 g) is the Surface RT also quite heavy compared to other tablets like the Apple iPad 3 (652 grams) , the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (583 grams) or the Acer Iconia Tab W510 (574 grams). The tablet Microsoft is indeed almost a half inch thicker than Acer (9.3 cm compared to 8.95 cm).
The Surface RT has a full USB port, a mini HDMI port and a 3.5mm audio jack to the right and left edge of the screen down. There are also two magnetic connections: right for the external power supply for the optional keyboard and bottom covers, more about that later. The practical magnetic power we also know Apple laptops, it's the first time we encounter them in a tablet.
The super bright LED IPS screen provides a wide viewing angle, has a good contrast and shows slightly faded colors. The screen resolution of 1366 x 769 pixels, in combination with a screen diagonal of 10.6 inches a pixel density of 148 ppi, similar to most regular Android tablets, but slightly less than the (sharper looking) 155 ppi of the Acer Iconia Tab W510 and much less than the (sharper) 264 ppi of the Apple iPad 3.
The screen automatically rotates in the direction of view and respond to five touch points. There are two control buttons: on / off top and audio on the left. Below the screen there is a touch sensitive "Windows key" that allows you to the main menu of Windows RT calls. The small stereo speakers in the edges processed. This tablet also has two microphones: one beside the webcam on the front and the other next to the camera on the back.
Particular, the flip cover on the back, which can be used as a standard for the tablet to put down on a work surface. The screen tilts than about 10 degrees backwards.
You can expand the storage with a microSD card, but you will then be in the memory slot should priegelen that right under the flap hidden.
Technical characteristics
The Surface RT uses an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core SoC with a processor speed of 1.3 GHz and 2GB RAM. This is the same chipset used in previously tested by us Android tablets like the Toshiba AT300 or the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T.
Just like those Android tablets, you can use the Surface RT with different memory configurations buy. We tested the 32GB version, which costs 479 euro, but there is also a version with 64GB to 579 euros. The 32GB version has 16GB free space for user files and additional apps. With the 64GB version is 45GB free space.
You can that space up to 128GB if you expand a microSD memory card in the slot under the flap on the back insert.
The Surface RT thus offers a little more space than the Acer Iconia Tab W510 in a similar configuration. The 32GB version of the W510 only has 10GB free space, while in the 64GB version is only 30GB. Put differently, nor unexpected: Windows RT has a compact code base than Windows 8.
WiFi 802.11ab/g/n is built, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. As with the Iconia W510 lacks unfortunately a GPS chip. A digital compass is certainly present, along with an accelerometer and a gyroscope.
This pitch-black tablet has two cameras front and rear, but that only offer a resolution of 1 megapixel and are therefore particularly suitable for video chatting.
Touch and Type Covers
Optionally you a Touch (€ 199.99) or Type Cover (€ 129.99) for the Surface RT buying. Optional is a big word: if you really want to get out all the stops for this tablet (read: if you are going to use Office RT intensive) then one of these covers necessary. As the name implies, it covers not only protect the screen of your tablet, but they also contain full qwerty and azerty keyboards.
The slightly cheaper TouchCover is a bit thinner and lighter than the Type Cover, but the built-in keyboard has no moving buttons, so you can type less quickly than the cover type. Are you planning a lot of text typing with this tablet, we recommend the type of cover.
The TouchCover adds 204 grams to the weight and 3mm to the thickness of the tablet. The Type Cover adds 215 grams and 6mm to it. Both covers clicks magnetically stuck to the bottom of the tablet. This mechanism works very smoothly. The magnetic connection is also firm.
The toetsenlay-out is identical in both. Both covers have a touch-sensitive surface that you can control the Windows mouse.
RT Windows
RT Windows works exactly the same as Windows 8. There's even a classic Windows desktop on this tablet, just like with Windows 8, but the big difference is that you do not have Windows x86 software on this ARM-based tablet can run. So you're totally dependent on the apps in the Windows Store, which fortunately become more crowded, but currently it contains a lot less apps than the app stores from Apple (iOS) and Google (Android). Nevertheless, there are apps for every day, both for which you have to pay as free.
However, keep in mind that many popular programs, such as alternative web browsers (Chrome, Firefox) are not currently available for Windows RT. In terms of browser you are therefore obliged to use built-in Internet Explorer 10. Among others, the Flash support of IE10 late still to be desired ...
What you get free with this tablet, is an ARM version of Microsoft's office software Office 2013. This "Office Home and Student 2013 RT" consists of the components Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Note that Outlook is not in it.
You can change your existing Office documents on this tablet open, edit and save, without loss of information, or the layout of your document changes. We have tried this with small and large files and found no problems fixed. For Office users, this is obviously a big plus.
Performance
The Microsoft Surface RT tablet runs no classic Windows programs and you can therefore no existing Windows benchmarks run. Even Microsoft's own Windows Experience Index is not available for this tablet. It is therefore very difficult to compare such performance with the Acer Iconia Tab W510. We dare however that the Acer Iconia Tab W510 is slightly faster than the Microsoft Surface RT. This is evident both from our subjective experiences, as a cross-platform benchmark as the Futuremark Peacekeeper web test, in which the Surface RT scores 347 points, while the Iconia Tab W510 in this test takes 406 points. Apple's iPad 3 cites in this benchmark also 500 points.
The Surface RT starts in 21 seconds (compared to 10 seconds for the Iconia Tab W510). From sleep mode, the tablet is within the second wake.
In the Peacekeeper test battery keeps the Surface from RT to 442 minutes (just over 7 hours). The Iconia Tab W510 brings in that test a battery life of 733 minutes, but that was in conjunction with the battery dock. The Apple iPad 3 scores 549 minutes. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300T (Android as an operating system, but the same chipset as the Surface RT) scores only 311 minutes. The autonomy of the Surface RT is certainly reasonable.
Conclusion
The Microsoft Surface RT is a good, solid, but too expensive Windows tablet. For little more money you can buy for example the Acer Iconia Tab W510 that are lighter, faster and more complete, greater autonomy and you furthermore all Windows programs can run and not just Windows apps like this Surface RT RT. There are also some unevenness in the operating system, though we can objectively determine this difficult. But during the test period of about two weeks responded the Surface RT twice no more input and we had to restart the device. We got no error and thus have to guess the cause of these crashes. The fixed crashes occurred coincidentally or not is always on when changing the keyboard covers.
The CEO is too busy and always on the go. Time to celebrate the success of the LN-founders of competition due to his team, he still had not. Twelve hours after the ceremony and sat Oeller Markus Ernst (31) on the plane to Munich. On
Monday morning, but that is now made up: In the bar room of the Media

(MSM), he wants nachfeiern the price at a breakfast with all employees.
"I consider this award as a very great compliment. Will now be seen by many, what we "make Oeller said yesterday during a visit to the LN-editors. "For customers, we have told the price, it's like a kind of TÜV seal of approval."Already on Friday showed a screen at the entrance of the current MSM offices LN-title page with the winning photo. Here in the bar room sitting together programmers and marketing experts and work on the projects. In a conference room hang two 80-inch screens, cameras are mounted on tripods. "This is our virtual classroom," says Jan Tauchnitz (38). "From here, conduct employee training, which can track the students live at home on their computers," says the MSM staff.Training

which was founded in 2009 and today has already 26 permanent employees
in Lübeck. If we add all the coaches in the field, there are even 55 people. Customers of training include Bayer, Roche and MAN.
The other main area of business is the development of very specific software on behalf of customers. Programmers of MSM have developed the presentation for the big-screen table that stands in the new Niederegger Café. "The
idea is that customers will be invited to inform themselves playfully
about the company," says programmer Dirk Baltinowitz (44). Many people at the same time as a giant phone with your finger touch can view videos or photos.Niederegger is a relatively small customer says Oeller. The large, these are Microsoft, Samsung, and Hochtief. MSM has for Microsoft customers, the new Windows closer to the eighth "We

In 2009 he founded MSM - only with equity. The first office was quickly outgrowing. The 2013 Oeller wants to use for consolidation. "The structures must keep pace with the rapid growth," he says. And not only his company has grown, and his three year old daughter, who was born when MSM was being started. The 5,000 euro prize money will Oeller invest in server technology for "virtual classrooms". When award sponsor Gregory Wintersteller He wants to thank particularly: "I think it's great that he has something set up."
Microsoft opened up a new "Envisioning Lab" at its Redmond headquarters today. It shows off Microsoft's view of what the post-PC world looks like in 5 to 10 years.
That vision involves a lot of giant, voice-command, wall-sized touchscreens like the 80-inch screen Bill Gates used last month during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit.
It's a pretty cool thought but we're not sure if it's very practical.Microsoft has been convinced that our home furnishings and/or walls will become giant computers for a while. Before the name "Microsoft Surface" was used to designate the company's Windows 8 PCs, "Surface" was the name of a 30-inch touchscreen table released in 2007. (It was the subject of a hilarious College Humor spoof video)
That table still exits, only now it's called the Microsoft PixelSense. We've yet to walk into someone's home and see one. Then again the device, made by Samsung, is pretty pricey, at $8,400. Most of what you'd use it for can be done on a tablet today.
Microsoft in 2011, in partnership with Samsung, has developed an innovative technology built into the new version of the touch table surface, PixelSense V2.
PixelSense technology can transform each pixel data receiver can detect and recognize the touch of the fingers and hands, or the presence of objects, the information is immediately processed and interpreted. The table has four USB ports for connecting any device (camera, USB ...). In addition, the table also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an Ethernet port for power always be connected.
At the technical level, there is an Athlon II X2 Dual-Core also integrates a graphics chip AMD Radeon HD 6700m. Table a thickness of 10 cms for a diagonal of 40 inches (1920 x 1080 resolution) and running Windows 7.Tout for a price of 7600euros.
It is found regularly in exhibitions or private in some places such as restaurants (eg the Touch'in Paris) offering customers place their orders via the table.
Why are we talking about all this while it's been a while since the table is available PixelSense? Simply because the EPSI (School of Computer Engineering) and particularly the association EPSILAB will receive the table of 5 to 11 with Microsoft Paris.Come try it on February 9 for the open day of EPSI and discover all these features, games and applications.

Despite the moderate success so far of Windows RT Acer has not given up his plans for a suitable tablet. Actually, they wanted to jump to start Windows 8 and Windows RT bring a corresponding tablet on the market, but then Microsoft introduced its surface.
The course of history, we know - since Acer can hardly misses an opportunity to shoot poison darts at Microsoft and the Surface. Meanwhile, I can do it quite well understand: Acer has seen in Windows 8/RT a great chance for a way out of their crisis. And what they have been delivered, can also really impressive. The Iconia Tab W510 for me that is currently the x86 Tablet with the best value, and if the S7 Ultrabook gets the fan problems under control, I can see that far in front.
Accordingly, I also see a Windows tablet from Acer RT eagerly anticipate - based on the hardware of the W510 and at a comparable price could be the Surface RT so absolutely defy. I might almost say: What are you waiting for,
The answer to the question Acer's European boss Oliver Ahrens delivers in an interview with ITworld: The RT Windows Tablet from Acer is almost ready - "it might already be on the market," Ahrens quoted. You hold the plans but for now back yet, because Microsoft earlier in the duty provides: It would have to make some improvements to be made RT Windows, Microsoft must also do more to Windows RT closer to the customer.
Which may contradict one does not like it I had recently put in a comment on Windows RT. Except for improvements in the system itself must also be awaited as to develop the hardware platforms. At the moment it looks so, as the next generation of x86 chips could certainly catch up with ARM.
The IdeaPad Yoga 11 is an ultraportable 11.6 "IPS panel with a touch screen, coated with a thin layer of glass to increase its strength and can use up to five contact points at once. His definition is limited to 1366 x 768 pixels, which is fairly standard for a machine of this size. Finally, the screen is very faint, even when set to maximum.
It has the particularity of using a hinge allowing it to rotate 360 °. The keyboard can be used as a support to place the machine in inverted "V" or bend to compose a touch pad. The keys will be disabled automatically. Although the keyboard is slightly recessed to avoid contact it will still be careful where you will ask (avoid tables full of crumbs). We would have preferred that Lenovo offers a caching system.
As if on paper it seems like a very good idea, the contact buttons on the legs when you tripatouillez screen is not the most pleasant. In addition, one wonders how long the machine will paint does hold and hide the first friction. Finally, we will have a preference for solutions detachable shelves, even if it requires always have with you the two elements to recompose his machine.
Connectivity and convenient without a chip Tegra 3 "core Companion"
The keyboard is rather typical of Lenovo products with half rounded keys. Rather comfortable to use despite some small touches, such as arrows, for example, it is easily to hand. Note that the function keys (F1 to F12) are only accessible via the concurrent support of "Fn" key. The rest of the time they used to fly as shortcuts to adjust the volume, activation of Wi-Fi or the brightness of the screen. In addition, a multi-touch pad of 90 x 60 mm and is part of the two buttons (not visually delimited), still very useful on Windows.
Within this configuration, it is a NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC that takes place. Unlike versions for Android entitled to four hearts one, here there are only four, the "Companion core" to be used only for small tasks is not present. They operate at 1.3 GHz maximum when all active and up to 1.4 GHz on a heart via a Turbo mode. The whole is accompanied by 2GB of RAM as well as 64GB of storage (44 GB available in practice).
On the left side of the machine, there is a button (+ / -) to adjust the volume, one HDMI 1.4 output, a USB 2.0 port and a 3.5mm jack for headphones and one microphone. On the right side, a switch allows you to lock the screen rotation, but there is also a second USB 2.0 port, an SDHC card reader and the power connector. We regret the absence of a port as fast as USB 3.0, but it will be the generation Tegra chips 4 to qualify for such a possibility.
Connectivity side, there is a Wi-Fi module from Broadcom 802.11n as well as Bluetooth 4.0. Some may regret the absence of a network port, even at 100 Mb / s. However, with dimensions of 298 x 204 limited x 15.6 mm (screen included), it was impossible to bring such a connector . The weight is rather light with 1.24 kg on the scale and recall some memories for fans of netbooks. This may seem to be a handicap against in tablet mode.
Confusing first moments, thank you RT Windows!
As we mentioned, it comes as Microsoft Windows RT, which includes Office 2013 and RT in its "Preview" again for the moment (but in French), which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. No other application is provided by the manufacturer. If the concept of the machine was already confusing use of the OS originally thought for touch pads may surprise.
Indeed expected to have a conventional notebook and we are left with the various limitations imposed by Windows RT. The almost exclusive use of the home screen and applications Modern UI tends to give us the feeling of being restrained. In practice, Office 2013 RT 10 and Internet Explorer File Explorer can be used in desktop mode, everything happens in full screen.
In this regard, note that the Windows Store has some applications stamped "For Lenovo" and if we could believe for a moment that this statement would be sufficient to be able to buy / install on any machine manufacturer, in the end it n 'nothing is because the majority of them are only available for the x86 architecture, which is obviously not the case with our Yoga 11. Damage.
For games, by cons, it is possible to use the NVIDIA TegraZone (it will install) and filter the content for you. However, you will find some titles that have been designed to take advantage of the NVIDIA chip by small developers. No chance to find titles developed by big players like Electronic Arts or Rovio (Angry Birds) for example. Hopefully that will change soon.
Good performance, but less than a Atom solution
In terms of performance measurement, our choices were quite limited for the moment. 3DMark for Windows RT is indeed not yet available and no special tools are really at the moment. So we had to settle on measures via the browser.

Big sister RT Surface, Surface Pro offers a beefier configuration and a complete operating system Windows 8 (read the RT difference between Windows and Windows 8). Its price is also beefier since the basic 64GB (without cover / keyboard) costs $ 899 which must be added a few hundred dollars to have the keyboard dock cover.
Its hefty price tag has not prevented the shortage since the 128 GB model at $ 999 is already sold on the online store of Microsoft resellers and Staples and Best Buy also announced a stock-for both models (perspective since both distributors may not have received few models for sale). Currently only the 64GB model on the Microsoft store is still available.
If we believe the words of the American giant, the tablet was however produced one million copies. To recall the Surface Pro has the following features:
screen 10.6 "Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels)
Intel Core i5
64 or 128 GB SSD storage
4GB of RAM
can connect a smart cover which includes a keyboard (optional)
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / MicroSD / Mini DisplayPort
We still do not know when this new version of Surface invade the world, but rumors say that it is only a matter of days, at most a few weeks.
The competition is going to be very intense in the market to come. Microsoft Surface Pro vs Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 vs Samsung ATIV Tab Smart PC Pro fight in the Ultrabooks/tabs segment will become very hot indeed
Microsoft’s Surface Pro is due to ship on Feb. 9. The device is Microsoft’s much-touted tablet/Ultrabook hybrid with the full version Windows 8 OS. The device starts at $899, a price that is slightly lower when compared to the prices of top Ultrabooks. But, put against the prices of mainstream tablets, it is a bit higher. Anyway, more devices are to emerge or have already come up with the firmware.
Microsoft’s hardware partners like Samsung, Lenovo, Acer and HP have joined the Windows 8 bandwagon with some nice products. Some of them are powerful enough to vie with Surface Pro, the signature model of the software. The device is available with a large 10.6-inch screen and in 64GB and 128GB models. It is powered by Intel Core processor and 4GB of RAM. Attached with a keyboard, the device is a simply an Ultrabook. Here are four Surface Pro alternatives.
Samsung’s ATIV Tab Smart PC Pro
The ATIV Tab Smart PC is more an Ultrabook with an 11.6-inch display and a keypad that can be detached to turn it to a tablet PC, though. Codenamed the 700T, the machine weighs roughly at 857 grams in tablet mode. The device’s display offers a resolution of 1920 x 1080-pixels. It is powered by Intel’s Clover Trail processor and 4GB of RAM. It also has features like microSD slot and microHDMI port and its price starts at $1,199.
Asus Taichi
It is a cool hybrid Windows Phone 8 device. It is a dual screen machine with one screen on the rear panel and one on the front panel. Well, at a glance, it will look like a laptop with its 11.6-inch display, but an equally-sized touchscreen on the rear panel makes it as a tablet as well. The device has two versions, the Taichi 21 DH51 and Taichi 21 DH71.
The former one is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and 128GB of SSD storage. It comes for a price of $1288. Meanwhile, the second one is up with a faster Intel Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD of internal storage. It is up for grabs for $1565, however. In common, they have same display sizes and resolution, 4GB of RAM, a 5MP webcam and a pair of USB 3.0 ports.
Acer Iconia W700
Acer is a close partner of Microsoft. Though it openly questioned the firm for building own tablets, the Taiwan tech maker launched a nice Windows 8-based tablet called the Iconia W700. It is an Intel Core i5 processor-based machine that comes with 128GB of SSD internal storage.
The 128GB version of the Acer tablet comes for $999 and its less-priced 64GB model comes for $799. The Iconia W700 is equipped with an 11.6-inch display that can show content in 1080p full high-definition. It weighs at 1.04 kilograms. Features like a micro-HDMI port, a 5MP rear camera are other features of the tablet with Windows 8.
Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13
The IdeaPad Yoga is not a tablet, indeed. It is a large 13-inch Ultrabook. But, the Windows 8-based machine is known for its capability to look like both as a tablet PC and laptop. You can flip over its display to turn it from a laptop to a slate, but an unconventionality larger one. The Yoga is equipped with an Intel Core i3 processor. It has a 13.3-inch screen and it weighs at 1.5 kilograms.
Lenovo is to sell the device for $1049. The Chinese tech maker has also launched a less expensive model for the device, called the ThinkPad Twist. This convertible device is priced at $829. The company sells the ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Windows 8 for $629. While the Yoga 11, an ARM variant of the series, comes for a price that starts at $749.

I started with an adventure smatphone Symbian Nokia (E65) and Ten Mobile operator (if they are people who remember it - check!). I then switched to Bouygues with the first Galaxy android who rowed to death but otherwise cool to discover the first steps of android. I then replaced the Galaxy S: big disappointment because copy-pasted iphone 3G with hardware that is not the road. Then my friend offered me a Galaxy Tab 10.1 also with a design copy-pasted on the iPad and almost unusable because of its slowness. Bye bye samsung.
Thanks to the pub for the Lumia 800 TPH distributed in the Paris metro I discovered this new OS and I cracked. This is the first time I had a camera "smart" fully met me, never had anything to say about this so beautiful.
WP8 arrival and incompatibility be called with my Lumia 800, so past anger, I made my docile sheep and I bought the Lumia 920. Mixed review because even though I love it as there are bullet points:
Zune (which I love) is no longer compatible and the software that replaces the sync for this is shit without a name. I do not understand that we can dare to leave it.Bugs like that off and forced to do a soft reset. Since most MAj Portico problem for now.
Phone of course, surfing and tethering, sexting, pictures of my cat, and also need to have my documents in my pocket (perfect for that office). No games apart Wordament but I am very bad.I hope that the OS is expanding a bit without losing either its simplicity. Should review the design a bit in some cases, for example when a page with lots of information (such page of search results bing) that white on black is ugly and painful. I want a real calendar because I can not stand that comes with WP8. The system update is simply revolting because it is at the mercy of Microsoft, then constructors (in my case Nokia) and operators.
Marcello Tansini 25/02/2013, 09:45 Print Email Pdf Not only iOS, Android and Windows 8. Or rather, not only iPad and tablets equipped with one of the many versions of Google's operating system or the latest release of Microsoft. The market for software for digital tablets is enriched with Ubuntu or the renewed version of the software from Canonical, shown in the release for smartphones.
The contact points are not lacking, from an interface devoid of physical buttons to be able to exploit the totality of the available space. The main point of distinction is the multitasking, or the ability to open, tile and ...
Another feature is the creation of multiple user accounts, along the lines of what is possible with the traditional PC, with a lot of different login and password. Do not miss the integration with a voice interface. The first experience with this operating system proves to be innovative. Just "creep" one of the four sides of the tablet to have on the touch menu settings, notifications to be read, or applications to control your favorites.
The latter are developed in HTML5. We could not miss the online store where you download them. Ubuntu is already present in the market (and abundantly used) the Ubuntu One cloud service.
Microsoft is gearing up for its next big release, the Windows Surface Pro tablet. The company’s one more attempt at hardware has kept the industry thinking on many aspects. One of them is whether the forthcoming device is a tablet or a PC.
A tablet is a touch-screen device with a slab design which provides basic computing capability but is not actually a computer. The tablet, in fact, serves as a bridge between smartphones and the personal computers. Microsoft, with its Surface Pro tablet, is trying to build a new bridge, to bring the distance even closer. The Windows OS maker has not been a successful name in the hardware field, with only Xbox to save some grace. But still, the company is hopeful of a turn of fortunes.
The Surface Pro looks like a tablet and works like one too but the machine has the soul of a PC. The device is based on Intel chip processors and has two fans integrated into the hardware. It can manage to run heavy duty PC software like iTunes, Photoshop and others.
The tablet has a bright 1080p screen but projects a better resolution picture of 2550×1440, when connected to an external display such as a TV. The tablet supports all the peripherals supported by a normal PC such as external drives, flash drives, keyboard, mouse and others.
The tablet-PC comes with a special keyboard cover, designed exclusively for Surface Pro by Microsoft. The Touch Cover serves the dual purpose of a cover as well as of a keyboard. The keyboard has a keyboard layout sketched on to the cover and works like an actual keyboard hardware. There’s also another variant called Type Cover which has actual keys and a trackpad also.
The Surface Pro tablet has been priced at $900 for the 64 GB model, and the 128 GB variant will retail for $1200. But the question is whether such a device may manage to do well commercially in a highly competitive market where the same amount can fetch a nice lightweight laptop with much more memory capacity. The Surface Pro has the mobility aspect going for it, which works in portrait mode also.
The 10.6 inch tablet with an innovative metal kickstand which helps it sits easily in the desk. The Surface Pro has been a significant improvement over the previous Surface RT. The screen resolution has increased and the software support also in the latter version. The device weighs lighter than a laptop but heavier and thicker than average tablets available in the market today. The battery life too takes a beating as it fares worse than most tablets as the PC level features juice out a lot of power.
The storage capacity on the hardware is very low as the 64 GB model has only 23 GB usable memory. The 128 GB model makes only 83 GB available for storage. Both the devices have a lot of space dedicated to the Windows operating system.
The Surface Pro is being launched as marketed as an ultra-powerful tablet which is able to turn into a laptop on-the-go, increasing mobility of the device and enhancing the productivity significantly.
But it remains to be seen whether the latest device is able to win the hearts of the average user looking for a tablet or a computer and which market welcomes it with more warmth. Or will Microsoft again get a cold shoulder,The picture will become clearer when Windows Surface Pro goes on sale this Saturday.
Bob Pfeifer wrote that he wanted to use “tab settings” in Microsoft Word
to create a roster of mobile-home park residents by their lot number, name, phone number and email address — but he couldn’t get the data to line up properly in columns.
Well, back when such a roster was created on a typewriter with mono-spaced characters, using the space bar to line up items worked fine — but it’s even easier on a computer with the “tab settings” seen on a horizontal ruler.
In Microsoft Word (and other word processing programs), default tab settings are 1/2 inch apart, meaning each time you hit the TAB key, the cursor moves 1/2 inch to the right. However, you can create your own tab stops with Word’s horizontal ruler.
If you don’t see the ruler, in pre-2007 versions of Word click on View>Ruler. In newer versions of Word, checkmark Ruler (in the View>Show/Hide group) whereupon a tiny “L” will be seen on the ruler’s left end. This means “Left Tab” and clicking on the “L” will cycle through other tab settings, such as Right, Center, and Decimal Tab.
To establish a left tab, click on the ruler where you want it to appear. At this point, all the default 1/2-inch tab stops preceding the one you establish will become nonfunctional; but the default tabs beyond yours will still be in effect until you install more “personal” tabs.
With your personal tabs established you can begin typing in the data you want to be tabbed into position. If you then discover that a tab isn’t exactly where it should be, you can mouse-grab it and slide it left or right. Any item “aligned” to the tab will move along with it.
Once you have all your first line of items tab-aligned to your satisfaction, pressing ENTER will begin a second line of text that will automatically have all your personal tab settings in place. If you later decide a tab setting should be adjusted left or right, mouse-select ALL lines of text before moving it. Then all pertinent items in all the lines will follow accordingly.
In Pfeifer’s roster, everything worked with LEFT tabs. If he had wanted the mobile-home park’s “lot” numbers to right-align (as in doing, say, prices on a menu) a RIGHT tab would have been clicked into the ruler accordingly.
An alternative method for setting tabs is to click on Format>Tabs (in pre-2007 Word versions) — or, using Word 2007/2010, in the “Paragraph” box click on the tiny down-arrow and then click on the “Tabs” button.
Here you’ll find options for typing in your tab settings, such as 3.5 inches (as opposed to clicking them into position on the ruler). You’ll also see an option to Clear All tab settings, in case you want to start over.
You’ll also find options for connecting tabbed items with dots or dashes, which are called “Leaders.” It pays to experiment with Word’s tab options.Working with tabs in Microsoft Word.
Available in Belgium since Thursday, February 14, 2013, Windows Surface Touch Pad RT stands on the road to the Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Asus Transformer Pad.What is the first digital slate Microsoft, Here's our verdict, forged after five days of intensive testing.
The highlight
The couple made the retractable kickstand and keyboard is magnetized fly. Few seconds to switch from one configuration to a purely tactile position ideal for work, write text in Word or watching a film. This simplicity and efficiency remind expertise ergonomic Apple.
The black dot
Windows is Windows. And even stripped down version of Windows 8 called RT, the operating system may hang. If the keyboard is connected, the good old Ctrl - Alt - Delete is still required to access the Task Manager before forcing the closure of misapplication.
The conclusion
Between crashes and surfing released Internet Explorer 10 between the resolution and the presence of mast precious Word and Excel, and between cameras catastrophic oh ergonomic keyboard, RT Surface blows hot and cold.
As frustrating as attractive tablet Microsoft calls occasionally a touch of resourcefulness, where Apple keeps you by the hand with his iPad.
